Nominate your most favorite 7 Wonders of Nature

Here’s a new buzz for everybody specially for the globe trotters. Traveling is one great way of experiencing different culture and a chance to appreciate the beauty of nature. In line with this, the nominations for new 7 Wonders of Nature of the world is being finalized at present. Last July 2007 the winners for the New 7 wonders of the world was announced and the places that grabbed the new title were (in alphabetical order):
1. Chichen Itza - Mexico, El Castillo
2. Christ the Redeemer - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
3. Colosseum - Rome, Italy
4. Great Wall of China - China
5. Machu Picchu - Cuzco, Perú
6. Petra - Jordan
7. Taj Mahal - Agra, India

Me, being a Filipino I support top two nominees from the Philippines: 1) Tubbataha Reef and 2) Chocolate hills. The rest I opted for other natural spots in 5 different continents like North America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and South America. Only the top 21 nominees among the top 77 candidates will be short-listed.

You can visit www.new7wonders.com and find out what are the magnificent and breathtaking sites that you want to vote. Help support the Tubbataha Reef and Chocolate hills! Mayon Volcano is also nominated. Each voter can cast 7 votes, so there’s plenty of beautiful places to choose from.

This campaign will surely pave the way to the influx of tourist in every single country that was mentioned in the site. A great way to promote awareness of the preservation of environment to perhaps lessen the damage of global warming.

The Call for Applications

One good thing I get to learn from my job is to correspond with applicants seeking post-graduate education mostly from Asian origin. Two years ago I was assigned to send out call for applications on scholarship for Masters in Gender Studies . Spreading the word was a easy task through our local media and gender email networks.

I made sure that they are aware of important document that needs to be submitted together with the application form. Interested applicants were asked to hand in the following documents to the Admissions Officer:

  • A completed application form;
  • A tentative one-page research abstract for the master’s thesis similar to application essays;
  • Attested transcript(s) of previous Bachelor’s Degrees;
  • TOEFEL/IELTS score or evidence of English language proficiency; and
  • Two (2) recommendation letters

Then comes several queries which called me to find some hands on solution together with the Admissions staff. They would often asked me to inform them about the status of their application and vice versa. Well of course, I understood, it’s their future at stake.

There were few who had a hard time meeting the deadlines. As some bureaucracies are concerned, it caused delays on their submission of papers. Like for example a single transcript and recommendation letters takes time to accomplish and delivered by local postal services. The sooner it gets, the more tension develops between the school and the people involved. If you are into this kind of situation, let me suggest you prepare the requirements ahead of the deadline at least three to six months before. This will determine a greater chance of accomplishment and establish a good record of completion.

Overall, doing the correspondence was fulfilling specially when I got the chance to meet the chosen few. I felt happy for them.

Reduce Harmful Car Emissions by Carpooling

What else could be better than a clean and green environment? According to reports, driving a car is the single most polluting thing people do. In addition to pollution, each gallon of gas burned produces 20 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, widely believed to contribute to global warming. The average vehicle produces .9 lbs of CO2 per mile.

Among other solution on helping cleaning the air by avoiding miles driven in cars, carpooling is one of them. Carpooling is when the car is driven for more than one person with a common destination. If a car driver takes you and two other friends to a party 6 miles away and 6 back, you used 12 car miles for yourself and saved 12 car miles for each extra rider (12+12=24)! The driver and first passenger are considered to be essential, and therefore, not extra people.

Carpool services are available everywhere. You can find it in ridesearch.com or seek in the community where you belong. In our neighborhood there’s a group of city workers who assigned themselves each day of the week who will take turn to bring his/her own car to the office. It calls for a little discipline though, as you have to wake up early in the morning to be on time for the departure. More so, it makes travel more enjoyable, practical and less polluting.

Contribute Global Solution to Global Warming

Recent report from World Bank showed that Thailand generated more than 40,000 tons of waste every year. Despite the government’s effort to promote recycling waste into electricity, it is still not widely practiced here. This is due to limited technical capacity and capital investment. Given that waste accounts for almost eight per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in Thailand, proper management of solid waste can help the country reduce emissions, earn carbon credit, and contribute to the global solution to global warming.

AIT being part of this country, has implemented a system for its tiny community to reduce, reuse and recycle materials. The amount of waste collected has significantly dropped to 20 per cent. It was made possible through waste segregation and Trash for Cash campaign every first Saturday of the month. Most of the wastes that are collected here in our community are type of HDPE Scrap (recyclable waste consisting of only High Density Polyethylene), paper scrap, bottle scrap, and metal scrap. Small roadside operators are responsible for collecting it and deliver them to huge waste management companies.

The shops inside the campus like AIT bookstore, grocery and Shop 108 has expressed their support to the Clean and Green AIT initiatives. The deal was if you buy goods worth THB 100 or more using your own bag you can get free Lipon F dish washing fluid. And Bring your Own Cup (BYOC) for take away drinks and get a free 3-in-1 coffee mix.

Other cool promotions were portable thermos cups with the Clean, Green AIT logo. Cups cost THB 120 each, with THB 35 going into the environment kitty. Clean, Green AIT canvas shopping bags - it could be taken to Tesco, Carrefour or TOPS supermarket, and say no to plastic. Proceeds are channeled into the Task Force’s activities.

Supergirl Collections

Have you ever watched the movie Supergirl long time ago? It was a story of a girl named Kara who was apparently superman’s niece.  I am trying to recall bits and pieces left in my memory.  She felt responsible for the loss of a special power which led her to the earth. The main catch was that she managed to overcome her inner fears before defeating her enemy.

Forward to now, the modern Supergirl I know of has her own story to tell. It starts with the question,

Many people have asked me:  Why SuperGirl?

I always believed that we are all Super, no matter who we are and what we do.  But sometimes, in the midst of the noise and activities of life and love, it is easy to lose bits and pieces of self.

The SuperGirl Collections are for girls who believe in their own worth, girls who believe anything is possible, girls who can bounce back from devastating life experiences.

The collections are also for those who want to be reminded of their own strength in times of heartbreaks, of their own dreams in times of confusion.  These are for girls who want to wear something beautiful that will symbolize their search for spiritual wholeness, and true love, and a life of happiness.

I hope that the SuperGirl Power Gadget collection will remind every SuperGirl how brave she is, and how strong, how compassionate especially when she feels less than what she truly is.  I also hope these will remind her to never lose sight of her passions and dreams.

Above all, each SuperGirl Power Gadget brings a message of hope – that we can all survive tragedies, that the human spirit is stronger than any challenge, that we can completely forgive, that we can love again, that we can be truly happy.  And that, we can shine!

Pick your gadget now, SuperGirl!  You have power and possibilities more than you ever imagine.

Aileen S.
(who fancies herself a SuperGirl since she was five)

Ramayana Ballet to perform in AITCC Auditorium

Here’s a short buzz on an exciting event that will happen in AIT next Monday. I’m sure the multicultural society of AIT eagerly awaits this one of a kind entertainment from Indonesia. I myself is preparing my Nikky to freeze some moments during that day. Keep in touch!

The Announcement:

Ramayana Ballet to perform in AITCC Auditorium AIT GJFC and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to co-host the renowned Ramayana Ballet
The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, in cooperation with the State University of Yogyakarta (UNY), have partnered to stage an upcoming presentation of the famous Ramayana Ballet and other traditional Indonesian dances in Thailand. The first performance will be at the AIT Conference Centre Auditorium on Monday, 17 March 2008 from 7-9 pm.

The AIT Golden Jubilee Fundraising Campaign (GJFC) and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia are jointly co-hosting the renowned ballet at AIT, which will be performed in traditional costumes to the accompaniment of live music played on traditional musical instruments from Indonesia. The program includes music of gamelan, the Golek Ayun-Ayun dance from Central Java, the Rantjak from West Sumatra and Trunajaya dances from Bali. The dances will be presented by 15 artists from the University of Yogyakarta and from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Ramayana, meaning the journey (aayana) of Rama, is a mythical tale describing the life of Prince Rama, the crown prince of the kingdom of Kosala. Rama has been exiled for a period of 14 years to the wilderness with his beautiful wife Sinta (also referred to as Sita) and his noble brother Lakshmana. On the 14th year of their exile, Princess Sinta is coveted and kidnapped by a 10 headed demon, Ravana. During the search for Sinta, the two brothers make friendships and alliances that culminate in a great war between good and evil.

This show is being organized by the GJFC under its strategy of “Networking and Image Building” with its partners. This promises to be a grand show for which there is no admission fee.
